Netflix Takes a Stand Against Password Sharing
The Basics:
- Netflix has announced that they will be cracking down on password sharing in the United States.
- The streaming service will only allow its accounts to be shared within a single household.
- Netflix is hoping that this new policy will drive more people to sign up for their own accounts.
The Details:
For years, Netflix users have been sharing passwords with friends and family members in order to bypass the need for separate accounts. However, the company has recently announced that they will be taking a stand against this practice in the US.
Netflix has started to alert its members of the new policy, which states that accounts are only to be used by members of a single household. This means that users can no longer share passwords with friends or family members who don’t live with them.
The company’s goal with this new policy is to drive more people to sign up for their own Netflix accounts. The streaming service has been aggressively investing in new content, and they are hoping that this will help them boost their subscriber numbers even further.
Author’s Hot Take:
While I understand why Netflix is doing this, I can’t help but feel a little disappointed. One of the things that made Netflix so great was the ability to easily share your account with friends and family members. Since the company has started investing so much in exclusive content, however, it’s understandable that they would want to ensure that more people are actually paying for it. At the end of the day, I think we’ll all get used to the idea of having our own separate Netflix accounts – we might even end up discovering some new shows or movies that we wouldn’t have found otherwise.
